Colombia launches first domestically built frigate for new naval defense strategy

Colombia is making waves in the naval defense sector with the groundbreaking construction of its first domestically built frigate, the Strategic Surface Platform (PES). The signing of the contract took place aboard the Colombian naval flagship, the ARC “Gloria,” highlighting the significance of this project for national defense.

Modeled after Damen’s Shipyeard SIGMA 10514, the PES frigate will enhance Colombia’s warfare capabilities, equipped for anti-air, surface, and submarine operations with advanced electronic warfare features. This new vessel will replace older models, modernizing Colombia’s maritime defense effectively.

The project, initiated in September 2022, outlines construction, testing, and deployment phases supported financially by the Colombian government with a substantial investment of nearly 1.6 trillion Colombian pesos. With over $66 million allocated for advanced systems, Colombia demonstrates its commitment to national security and sovereignty.

By investing in naval technology and infrastructure, Colombia not only strengthens its maritime defense but also boosts the local shipbuilding industry. This initiative positions Colombia as a significant player in regional defense, capable of safeguarding maritime interests and contributing to regional stability.
