Blinken Accuses Ben-Gvir of Disregard for Jerusalem Holy Sites

Strong opposition was expressed by the United States regarding Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir’s controversial visit to the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount. Secretary of State Blinken emphasized the disregard shown for the historic status quo of holy sites in Jerusalem during the visit on August 13.

Approximately 2,250 illegal Israeli settlers, including Ben-Gvir and other officials, stormed the complex to commemorate Tisha B’Av, causing tensions to escalate. Blinken condemned these actions, stating that they hinder diplomatic efforts for a cease-fire agreement and regional stability.

The US government looks to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to prevent similar incidents in the future and uphold the historic status quo. The Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third-holiest site in Islam, holds great significance for both Muslims and Jews.

Following the occupation of East Jerusalem in 1967 and the annexation in 1980, the international community has not recognized Israel’s claim to the city. Secretary Blinken reaffirms the US commitment to peace, stability, and the security of all parties involved.
