Russian border region of Belgorod has declared a state of emergency after attacks by Ukrainian forces, causing destruction and casualties. This follows a surprise cross-border attack in Russia’s Kursk region, leading to mass evacuations and emergency declarations. The situation is described as “extremely difficult” by Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, with daily shelling in the region.
Governor Gladkov is appealing to the government for a federal emergency declaration as Ukrainian drones target cities in the region. Russia claims to have shot down 117 drones overnight, mainly in Kursk, Voronezh, Belgorod, and Nizhny Novgorod.
Ukraine’s President Zelensky claims troops have advanced further into Russian territory, but the exact amount seized is uncertain. Ukraine has stated they do not intend to keep Russian territory and are willing to cease raids if Moscow agrees to a “just peace.”
President Putin accuses Ukraine of refusing peaceful settlements and claims Western influence in the conflict. Despite Russian claims of thwarting Ukrainian advancements, the situation remains fluid. US President Biden notes the offensive creates a dilemma for Putin as the conflict escalates.
