A case has been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh and eight other members of her cabinet on charges of “crimes against humanity” and “genocide”. The case was filed at the International Crimes Tribunal in Dhaka, formed in 2010 to prosecute those who opposed Bangladesh’s war of independence in 1971.
The investigation agency accepted the case after a student, Alif Ahmed Siam, was shot by police and later died from his injuries. This incident led to the filing of the suit by Siam’s father through his lawyer.
Advisers have stated that those involved in the recent killings during student protests could potentially face trial in the International Crimes Tribunal, including Sheikh Hasina. Efforts are being made to involve the UN in the investigation process.
Prior to these developments, three cases were filed against Hasina, who reportedly fled to India. The legal proceedings and implications surrounding these events highlight a significant moment in Bangladesh’s political landscape.
