Venezuela’s opposition gearing up for a massive protest on Saturday
The Venezuelan opposition is mobilizing global demonstrations on Saturday, August 17, in a show of support after claiming victory over President Nicolás Maduro in July’s controversial presidential election. The National Electoral Council is set to announce its final verdict on the election results on the same day.
Despite exit polls favoring opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, Maduro was declared the winner by the National Electoral Council. This decision sparked outrage and prompted the opposition to call for protests.
Opposition leaders, including Maria Corina Machado and Gonzalez Urrutia, have gone into hiding following threats from Maduro. The opposition insists on defending the truth and the will of the people expressed in the July 28 election.
