Uruguayan Brewery Reopens After Overcoming Competitiveness Issues

The FNC brewery in Minas, Uruguay, recently reopened after facing closure due to competitiveness issues in the beer market. The plant was closed in July, causing negotiations involving government authorities to find a resolution. The reopening ceremony took place on Monday, with 30 workers returning to clean and maintain the facility before full production resumes next week.
While some workers were laid off and others remained on strike, the brewery is set to start production and canning using a new system next month. Negotiations were briefly stalled due to disagreements over the union’s selection of workers for reopening day, but a new understanding was eventually reached.
The national government intervened to broker an agreement that included a cap on beer imports, ensuring that the Minas brewery’s output is not surpassed by imported products. FNC, founded in 1933, produces iconic beer brands and also operates in the malt business.
