Lai, in a meeting with former Japanese defense chief Shigeru Ishiba, pledged to stand together with the democratic camp to maintain deterrence against potential threats.
Ishiba, considered a top candidate for Japan’s next prime minister, stressed the importance of deterrence for peace in the region, alluding to the situation with mainland China’s claims over Taiwan. The discussions also touched on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, highlighting the need to prevent similar conflicts in Northeast Asia.
On the economic front, Lai sought Japan’s support for Taiwan’s entry into the Trans-Pacific Partnership and increased economic ties to reduce dependence on the Chinese market. Ishiba echoed the call for economic cooperation to drive regional development and ensure a secure environment.
The visit coincided with a US congressional delegation led by Marilyn Strickland, reinforcing U.S. support for Taiwan and democracy in the face of global challenges. The delegates affirmed their commitment to promoting freedom and democracy worldwide, standing united with Taiwan.
The discussions aim to bolster alliances and solidarity against potential threats to regional stability, emphasizing the collective efforts needed to safeguard democracy and peace.
