Finland’s Struggle to Retain International Tech Talent
A recent survey conducted by TEK and the Union of Professional Engineers in Finland has uncovered concerning trends regarding the ability of Finland to attract and retain international technology experts. The survey revealed that 89% of foreign tech experts are worried about the immigration debate in the country, with only 52% willing to recommend Finland as a place to live and work.
Juhani Nokela, TEK’s Director of Public Affairs, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that Finland is losing out on important contributors to its economic growth. The survey also highlighted discrimination faced by international professionals during recruitment processes, particularly those from non-European countries.
While many foreign experts feel integrated into Finnish society, challenges such as lack of knowledge about workers’ rights and unemployment persist. Nokela and Maria Jauhiainen called for policy changes including relaxing language requirements and providing Finnish language education by employers to address these issues.
The survey serves as a warning that Finland must act swiftly to prevent losing valuable talent crucial for its future growth and innovation.
