Parliament passes public procurement law in under 80 characters

The Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) recently passed the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Regulation 2024, a significant step towards operationalizing the Public Procurement and Disposal Assets Act 2018. This regulation aims to streamline the procurement process by providing standardized bidding documents and requests for proposals for procuring entities. It also seeks to boost incomes for suppliers, create employment opportunities, and increase government revenues through taxes.

The TNLA Committee of Finance and Economic Planning, led by Chairperson Changkuoth Bichiok, worked diligently to incorporate ideas and recommendations from a three-day workshop conducted with the World Bank Group. Bichiok emphasized the importance of passing this regulation in one sitting to comply with legal requirements and the peace agreement.

The passage of this regulation is crucial for South Sudan as it aligns with the priorities outlined in the 2018 Revitalized Agreement. By improving the public procurement system, the government aims to promote transparency, efficiency, and accountability in asset management.
