Mild quake shakes Syria and Lebanon — Naharnet

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck central Syria late Monday, reverberating into neighboring Lebanon and causing panic among residents. The tremor was felt in both Beirut and Damascus, with people rushing to the streets in fear of a more severe quake that could lead to building collapses. The ongoing tensions between Hezbollah and Israeli forces in Lebanon added to the anxiety of potential escalation to a full-on war.

The quake, reported as a 5.5 magnitude by Syria’s state-run news agency, was recorded as a 5.0 by the US Geological Survey. This event brings back haunting memories of a deadly 7.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria in February 2023, claiming thousands of lives. In the aftermath of the recent tremor, 25 people in Syria’s Hama city suffered minor to moderate injuries as they tried to escape the shaking.

The recurring seismic activity has left residents on edge, with memories of collapsed buildings from previous disasters haunting their minds. The fear and trauma are palpable, with one Damascus resident recalling the devastation of the past and expressing reluctance to return to their high-rise home.
