South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has directed key commissions to provide a realistic timetable for agreeing on the General Election date. This decision was made during a meeting involving all parties to the 2018 Peace Agreement to discuss the upcoming elections. The parties acknowledged the importance of holding elections as a vital component of stability and democracy in South Sudan.
Minister Martin Elia Lomuro stated that all parties are committed to conducting elections and will seek technical advice to ensure a consensus for peace. The High-Level Committee presented a report on the implementation of the Peace Agreement, and the meeting also covered the Tumaini Initiative in Nairobi, Kenya.
While the government aims to align with the existing peace agreement framework, obstacles remain such as the lack of funds hindering the National Elections Commission and the National Constitution Review Commission. The current timeline may delay the scheduled December elections due to the absence of voter registration and civic education.
The parties have expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue to address critical provisions of the peace deal. The recent Tumaini initiative in Kenya offers hope for renegotiating aspects of the peace agreement and potentially extending the transitional period.
