ISIS claims responsibility for deadly Kabul bomb blast

The recent bombing claimed by the Islamic State group in a Shia-dominated neighbourhood of Kabul has left one person dead and 11 wounded. The group targeted a minibus in a western Kabul neighbourhood, home to many Shia Muslims, who are often persecuted in Afghanistan. Italian NGO Emergency reported receiving eight wounded individuals, with seven requiring surgery.

Although bomb blasts and suicide attacks in Afghanistan have decreased since the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, other groups like Islamic State-Khorasan still pose a threat. IS-K, the Afghanistan branch of the Islamic State group, has been responsible for recent attacks on tourists and in other countries as well.

A UN official recently warned that IS-K presents a significant terrorist threat to Europe, with enhanced financial and logistical capabilities. However, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid dismissed these concerns, claiming the group has been weakened under the new Afghan government.
