A tragic incident in Kolkata has sparked a nationwide strike by nearly 300,000 resident doctors in India. The 31-year-old victim, a resident trainee doctor, was raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Federation of Resident Doctors Association India (FORDA) has called for the passing of the Central Protection Act for Doctors to ensure the safety of healthcare workers. Despite existing laws in most states, violence against doctors continues to be a prevalent issue. Female doctors, in particular, face increased vulnerability to assault and harassment.
R.V. Asokan of the National Indian Medical Association advocates for improved security measures in healthcare facilities, including the installation of CCTV cameras and the declaration of hospitals as “safe zones.” This move is crucial in a country grappling with high rates of violence against women, with many cases going unreported.
