A devastating wildfire in Athens has claimed its first reported death, as the body of a woman was found inside a burned-out factory in the city’s northeastern suburbs. The fire, which broke out in Varnavas, quickly spread to Patima Halandriou, prompting the evacuation of over 70,000 residents.
Despite the efforts of hundreds of firefighters and support from EU states, Serbia, and Turkey, the blaze continued to rage, with one firefighter sustaining serious burns and many others treated for fire-related injuries.
The destruction caused by the wildfire has reignited criticism of the Greek government, with newspapers calling for action and accountability. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has returned to Athens but has not yet commented on the disaster.
The tragic incident has brought back memories of the 2018 fires in Mati, where over a hundred lives were lost due to evacuation delays and errors.
