The FBI has launched an investigation after former President Donald Trump’s campaign revealed that its internal communications were allegedly targeted by hackers linked to the Iranian government. Trump stated that Iran was only able to access publicly available information. The FBI confirmed they are conducting an investigation into the matter, without specifically naming Trump or Iran.
In addition, the FBI is also looking into a potential hack targeting advisors to the campaign of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The investigation began when Biden was still a presidential candidate, with suspicions that Iran was behind the attempts to steal data from both campaigns. The Iranian government has denied any involvement in the hacks.
Trump’s campaign cited a report by Microsoft researchers indicating that Iranian government-linked hackers had targeted a high-ranking official from a US presidential campaign. The hackers allegedly took over the account of a former political advisor and used it to target the official. The identities of the targets were not disclosed in the report.
