Israeli Foreign Ministry condemns the “storming” of Al-Aqsa Mosque
Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Sufyan al-Qudah, expressed strong condemnation for the “storming” of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, calling it a “flagrant violation of international law”. The incident occurred when far-right National Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, led hundreds of Israelis into the mosque compound in annexed East Jerusalem to perform prayers marking a Jewish holiday. Ben Gvir, known for defying the ban on Jewish prayer at the site, vowed to “defeat Hamas” during his visit.
While non-Muslims are allowed to visit the mosque during specified hours, they are prohibited from praying or displaying religious symbols. The recent breach of these restrictions has led to violent reactions from Palestinians.
Ben Gvir’s actions have been denounced by both the Waqf, the Jordanian custodian of the mosque, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office for deviating from the status quo.
The incident occurred on the Jewish mourning day of Tisha Be’Av, a day that commemorates the destruction of the ancient temple. This is not the first time Ben Gvir has sparked controversy at the mosque, as he previously defied rules by praying inside the compound.
