Tanzanian Police released leaders of the main opposition party, Chadema, on bail after thwarting a planned assembly in Mbeya. The party intended to mark International Youth Day with a parade but faced a ban for an alleged illegal assembly.
Freed leaders included Chairman Freeman Mbowe and Vice-Chairman Tundu Lissu. They were arrested upon arrival in Mbeya for the scheduled event. The police force announced the release of all detained Chadema members to their respective regions after granting them bail.
The incident occurred ahead of local government elections, following a ruling party’s youth event. Concerns of inciting anti-government protests led to the crackdown on Chadema’s assembly. The police and Registrar of Political Parties issued bans based on incendiary social media videos.
The authorities warned against copying events from other countries, signaling further consequences for breaching national laws.
