“Israel is committing a genocide against the Palestinians, and I find this purchase process complicated.”
The Brazilian president’s chief advisor, Celso Amorim, has postponed the signing of a contract with Israel’s Elbit Systems for 36 armored vehicles with cannons, citing Israel’s actions in Gaza as the reason for the delay.
Amorim stated that cooperation with Israel on the military side goes against the International Court of Justice recommendation regarding Gaza, emphasizing the need to evaluate agreements beyond technology and price.
‘Self-Propelled Vehicles’
In May, Brazil’s Defence Minister delayed the signing of the purchase contract for self-propelled vehicles, following calls for an arm embargo by various organizations.
Diplomatic Tensions
Brazil and Israel have had strained relations, with Brazil expelling the Israeli ambassador over the Gaza conflict, prompting Israel to declare the Brazilian president “persona non grata.”
President Lula has drawn parallels between Gaza and Hitler’s atrocities, calling the situation a genocide with a staggering death toll and mass displacement.
Staggering Death Toll
According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, Israel’s offensive has resulted in thousands of casualties, including women and children, with a significant impact on the population and infrastructure of Gaza.
Mass Displacement
The war has led to mass displacement, famine, and a search for safety among Palestinians in Gaza, marking a humanitarian crisis of immense proportions.
