Exciting News from Berlin Zoo: Meng Meng the Panda is Expecting Twin Cubs!
Great news from the Berlin Zoo – Meng Meng, the female giant panda, is expecting twin cubs! The zoo authorities recently announced that an ultrasound examination over the weekend revealed developing fetuses in Meng Meng.
At just 2.5 centimeters long, the cubs still have a lot of growing to do before their expected birth at the end of August. Despite the excitement, Berlin Zoo vet Franziska Sutter cautioned that the pregnancy is still at a risky stage, with the possibility of resorption or embryo death.
Pandas have a unique reproductive mechanism, different from other mammals, where fertilized eggs do not immediately implant into the uterus. Meng Meng and male panda Jiao Qing arrived in Berlin in 2017 as a gift from the Chinese government. Their last offspring, Pit and Paule, were born in 2019 and flown to China in 2023.
Experts from China recently arrived to assist with the ultrasound scan, as Meng Meng initially showed reluctance. Despite some tummy pains, Meng Meng eventually cooperated for the examination.
