Bangladesh court orders investigation into ex-PM Sheikh Hasina’s murder case

A court in Bangladesh has opened a murder investigation into former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and six top figures in her administration over the police killing of a man during civil unrest last month.

A case has been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and six top officials in her administration in Bangladesh over the death of a grocer during civil unrest. The incident took place last month when police shot grocer Abu Saeed while trying to disperse protesters in Dhaka.

This legal action was initiated by private citizen Amir Hamza, who stepped forward as the family of the victim could not afford to file the case. The court accepted the case, naming Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, and others. Student leaders have been demanding justice for those killed during protests.

Hasina, who fled the country amid nationwide protests, is facing the first legal challenge after her tenure was marked by allegations of human rights abuses. The 76-year-old leader sought refuge in India, and Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus has taken over as the head of the interim government in preparation for upcoming elections.
