Will China’s charm offensive revive ties with central, eastern Europe?

China has been making strategic moves to rebuild ties with Central and Eastern Europe, particularly in light of growing suspicions and tensions. Wang Yiwei, a professor at Renmin University, suggested that China is seeking to revitalize its relationship with the region due to deep-rooted mistrust, especially following China’s perceived neutrality on the war in Ukraine.

The China-CEE cooperation mechanism, established in 2012, aimed to strengthen ties between Beijing and 16 European countries. However, cracks began to show after Lithuania withdrew in March 2021, citing trade deficits and unmet promises from China.

Despite challenges, China is now focusing on bolstering trade and investment ties in the region, particularly in the electric vehicle sector. This move could not only create jobs but also bring new technologies to Central and Eastern Europe.

As uncertainties loom, perceptions of China in CEE countries are evolving. While geopolitical tensions persist, there is potential for improved relations given China’s investment strategies and the changing political landscape in the region.

Ultimately, as China looks to engage with CEE countries amid geopolitical shifts and economic opportunities, the future of their relationship remains nuanced and dynamic.
