United States Increases Humanitarian Assistance to South Sudan by $95 Million
The United States has announced an additional $95 million in humanitarian aid to South Sudan, funded by the American people through USAID. US Ambassador to South Sudan Michael J. Adler and USAID Mission Director Kate Crawford revealed this news in a joint press statement on Monday.
This funding will play a crucial role in providing life-saving support to humanitarian partners, particularly the World Food Programme (WFP), in delivering essential food and nutrition aid to over 700,000 individuals in the most food-insecure regions of the country.
With this latest contribution, the total US government humanitarian assistance in South Sudan, facilitated by USAID and the US Department of State, has reached over $508 million in Fiscal Year 2024. This aid is timely as the nation is currently grappling with high levels of acute food insecurity, with over seven million people in need of assistance. Additionally, nearly 780,000 individuals have sought refuge in South Sudan from neighboring Sudan due to escalating conflict.
Moreover, the country is bracing for potential flooding that could impact as many as 3.3 million people in the coming months, making this humanitarian aid all the more critical.
