US-EU-Sunni coalition against Iran remains united, official says

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant addressed the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, highlighting the ongoing coalition of US, European, and Sunni countries protecting Israel from Iranian threats. Despite recent tensions stemming from Israel’s actions in the region, the coalition remained intact.

Following Israel’s targeted killings of Hezbollah and Hamas leaders, criticism from countries like Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Egypt intensified. This raised doubts about their willingness to assist Israel in the future. Israel defended its actions as necessary responses to threats posed by Iran and its proxies.

As the threats from Iran and Hezbollah persisted, moderate Sunni countries were convinced to continue supporting Israel’s defense. Geographically, it is challenging for Iran to attack Israel without using neighboring countries’ airspace.

Discussions within Israel about shifting priorities from Gaza to Lebanon indicate a potential strategic adjustment. Gallant’s push for a hostage deal with Hamas to end the conflict in Gaza reflects this evolving strategy. Chairman Yuli Edelstein’s involvement suggests a shift towards prioritizing Lebanon’s security over Gaza’s.
