The northeastern Australian city of Cairns was shocked when a helicopter crashed into the roof of a Hilton hotel during an “unauthorized” flight, causing a fire and forcing patrons to evacuate. The pilot, the sole occupant of the aircraft, was found dead at the scene. Investigation is underway to identify the pilot and determine the cause of the crash.
No injuries were reported on the ground, and officials confirmed that the helicopter had been taken for an unauthorized flight. It remains unclear if the pilot had a license or worked for Nautilus Aviation, the company that owned the aircraft.
Debris from the crash fell into the Double Tree Hotel pool, while a fire on the hotel’s roof was extinguished by daybreak. Guests were woken by a loud bang and evacuated as emergency services responded.
The incident raised concerns as the crash occurred in a no-fly zone for low-flying aircraft. Government investigators from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau were deployed to investigate the crash in Cairns, a famous tourist city near the Great Barrier Reef.
