Empowering Women in Unity State for Equitable Representation in Leadership
Women in Unity State are demanding equal representation in the state leadership, as highlighted during a recent women’s political discussion organized by the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA) network. State Gender, Child and Social Welfare Minister Rose Nyaboth Toy emphasized the need for women to have a 35% share as commissioners and directors general in various ministries, addressing the challenges of exclusion from leadership positions.
Speaking after the workshop, Minister Toy expressed her desire for more women to participate in politics and be appointed to key positions, calling on Governor Justice Riek Biem and his deputy James Tor Tugwuar to address this issue. The discussions, attended by 50 delegates, focused on the importance of women’s involvement in policy-making to serve the interests of the community.
SIHA field coordinator Nyayian Gatdet emphasized the minimal participation of women in policy making due to lack of opportunities. SIHA will facilitate the participation of eight individuals, including Minister Toy, in a national women’s political discussion in Juba.
