Turkey sets conditions for troop withdrawal from Syria

In a recent interview with Reuters news agency, Turkish Minister of National Defense Yasar Guler outlined the conditions under which Ankara would consider withdrawing its troops from Syria. Guler emphasized that Turkey is willing to support the establishment of a comprehensive constitution, free elections, and a normalized security atmosphere in Syria before considering any military pullout. This statement comes as part of Turkey’s regional charm offensive initiated in 2020.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s recent announcement of inviting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for talks on normalizing ties indicates a potential shift in Turkey’s approach towards Syria. However, Assad has made it clear that any discussions must address core issues, including the withdrawal of Turkish forces from northern Syria.

It remains to be seen how the situation will unfold, and whether both countries can reach a mutually agreeable solution that ensures stability and security in the region while respecting each other’s interests.
