A recent report from The Sunday Times highlights concerns raised by a tech industry counter-terrorism organization regarding content posted by Palestinian militant group Hamas on Elon Musk’s social media platform, X. The organization, known as the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT), is troubled by X’s membership on the board, stating that it undermines the group’s credibility.
The GIFCT includes major social media companies like Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter, and YouTube. Despite requests for comment, neither X Corp nor the GIFCT responded immediately.
According to The Sunday Times, X (formerly Twitter) has become a platform where Hamas videos can easily be found. Researchers were able to locate propaganda videos from banned terrorist groups within minutes.
The GIFCT’s independent advisory committee expressed concern in a recent report about decreasing online trust and safety capabilities, particularly targeting X. The report mentioned Musk’s strategy to turn X into a “free speech” platform, which involved allowing banned extremists and reducing content moderation efforts.
Established in 2017 under government pressure, the GIFCT is funded by member contributions. The Sunday Times reported that X, a founding member, is failing to make its full financial contribution.
