Attempted Arson Thwarted at Zurich Synagogue
Security guards at the Agudas Achim Synagogue in Zurich successfully prevented an attempted arson, saving the building from potential destruction. The suspect, a 32-year-old Swiss man with mental health issues, was apprehended by authorities after pouring gasoline outside the synagogue and fleeing the scene. The incident took place just before the afternoon prayer service, sparking concerns within the Jewish community.
Yehuda Spielman, a local council member, revealed that the suspect had visited other Jewish institutions in the city on the same day and earlier in the week. The motive behind the attempted arson was not linked to extremist ideologies, as confirmed by Zurich police.
Despite the scare, the synagogue community continued with their Sabbath rituals, including the afternoon prayer service and a traditional Sabbath meal with the rabbi. The episode serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and security measures in safeguarding religious institutions.
