Electric vehicles (EVs) are not a threat to fuel attendant jobs in South Africa, despite recent misleading information circulating. Martlé Keyter, CEO of operations at Misa, reassured the 50,000 fuel attendants in the country that their jobs are not at risk.
Keyter clarified that the confusion arose from mixing up the automotive manufacturing sector with the retail motor industry, which includes services like dealerships, workshops, and fuel stations. The total workforce in service stations, including administrative staff and cashiers, is about 87,000, not the inflated figure of 140,000 as previously rumored.
Hermann Köstens, Misa’s CEO for strategy and development, highlighted that only 0.15% of the 11 million vehicles on South Africa’s roads are EVs, with fully electric vehicles making up just 0.02%. He attributed the slow EV adoption in the country to the absence of government incentives and high price tags.
