The Kwara State Government has taken a stand against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the Ilorin metropolis by prohibiting the operations of scavengers in the area. This new strategy aims to promote a cleaner and healthier environment for residents.
An Environmental Taskforce has been inaugurated to ensure compliance with the new environmental guidelines. Over 300 task force officers will be conducting 24-hour surveillance and enforcement in various locations across the metropolis.
Offenders caught dumping refuse indiscriminately will face prosecution and fines ranging from N50,000 for individuals to N500,000 for big firms, as well as the possibility of a six-month jail term. Community service is also an option for offenders.
The ministry has engaged with stakeholders, including traditional leaders, market traders, and transport associations, to raise awareness about the importance of proper waste disposal. The public is urged to cooperate and support the government in maintaining a cleaner and greener Kwara.
With the provision of more waste collection bins and the involvement of commercial waste consultants, the government is committed to ensuring that residents have convenient options for proper waste disposal.
