Iran’s president nominates woman and ex-nuclear negotiator as ministers- Naharnet

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has proposed former nuclear negotiator Abbas Araghchi as the country’s new foreign minister and aims to appoint the first female minister in over a decade. If approved, it would mark a significant milestone for gender equality in Iran.

In a hard-line-dominated parliament, the proposed ministers, including Araghchi and Gen. Aziz Nasirzadeh for defense, will undergo a two-week review process for a vote of confidence. Pezeshkian’s administration also includes Farzaneh Sadegh as the potential female roads and housing minister, facing opposition from lawmakers advocating stricter cultural and social restrictions for women.

While Pezeshkian seeks to revive the nuclear deal and improve relations with the West, some appointees like police general Eskandar Momeni for interior minister represent a more moderate approach. However, challenges may arise as hard-liners dominate the legislature.

In a controversial move, former Vice President Mohammad Javad Zarif resigned over concerns about the lack of diversity in Pezeshkian’s Cabinet composition, highlighting the ongoing tensions within the government.
