Guangdong’s AI industry hits B, competing with Beijing, Shanghai

The artificial intelligence (AI) industry in China’s Guangdong province reached 180 billion yuan in 2023, with Shenzhen leading the growth. Despite lagging behind Beijing and Shanghai, Guangdong boasts over 489,000 AI-related companies, positioning itself as a key player in the industry.

Beijing’s AI output value surpassed 250 billion yuan in 2023, with 82 large language models (LLMs) launched in the city, contributing to its industry dominance. Shanghai’s AI industry output neared 150 billion yuan, with MiniMax AI based in the city alongside other major firms.

China’s closed-off internet environment has allowed domestic AI companies to thrive, with firms like Baidu, SenseTime, iFlyTek, and Alibaba Group emerging as major players in the market. Guangdong’s focus on integrating AI with manufacturing aims to propel the province’s industry to 440 billion yuan by 2027, with a strategic plan in place to foster growth in various sectors.
