A fast-moving wildfire fueled by gale-force winds raged closer to Athens, burning trees, houses, and cars. Greek authorities evacuated hospitals, towns, and villages due to the intense blaze. The fires, intensified by hot and dry weather from climate change, have spread rapidly across Greece.
Over 560 firefighters, supported by volunteers, aircraft, and helicopters, battled the flames spreading southwards from Varnavas to various fronts near Athens. Evacuations were carried out, and three hospitals were cleared in Penteli. The fire, with flames reaching 25 meters high, posed a significant threat under strong winds.
As the fire enveloped Mount Penteli and nearby areas, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis returned from Crete to manage the crisis. Greece, facing record heat and low rainfall, is on high alert for more wildfires. Officials warn of a challenging week as temperatures soar, making firefighting efforts arduous.
