A tragic incident unfolded in Athens, Georgia, as a 26-year-old man, Marquavious Sims, was shot and killed by police after waving around a firearm near a gas station. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported that officers responded to a call about a man brandishing a “machine gun” in the early hours of Sunday at Lexington Road and Gaines School Road.
Upon spotting Sims at a Verizon store, officers pursued him to a QuickTrip gas station parking lot. Despite being instructed to drop the weapon, Sims fired at the officers during a chase, prompting them to retaliate by shooting him multiple times. Sims later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital with no officers harmed in the confrontation.
Athens-Clarke County Police have requested the GBI to conduct an investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The two officers involved have been put on administrative leave pending the outcome. Sims’ body will undergo an autopsy at the GBI Crime Lab, and the case will ultimately be reviewed by the Clarke County District Attorney’s Office.
