Elderly Woman Sentenced to 17 Years in Jail for Involvement in Brasilia Riot Trial
An elderly woman, Maria de Fátima Mendonça Jacinto Souza, known as Fátima de Tubarão, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for her involvement in the Jan. 8, 2023, riots at the Three Powers Square in Brasília (DF). The sentence was announced after an STF virtual plenary session where she was found guilty of several charges, including violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law and armed criminal association.
Fátima gained notoriety for her role in the uprising, captured on video vandalizing the Planalto Palace. Her targeting of STF Justice Alexandre De Morães led to her arrest during Operation Lesa Pátria. De Morães upheld her pre-trial detention despite appeals citing health issues, stating that no exceptional reasons warranted her release.
