The distribution of rice as palliative measures by the Federal Government has stirred controversy in Edo State, especially with the upcoming governorship election. The opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state raised concerns about the whereabouts of the rice given to the state, sparking speculations and tensions between the state government and the APC.
Accusations were made by APC officials claiming that the rice received from the FG was being repackaged by the state government for its own food support program. Videos of residents looting rice from a trailer further fueled the debate, with conflicting statements from both sides.
While the state government denied hoarding rice, stating that relief materials were distributed through religious bodies, the APC continued to criticize Governor Obaseki’s handling of the situation. The issue, politicized and sensationalized, highlighted the lack of transparency and trust between the government and the people.
Amidst the controversy, calls for accountability and timely dissemination of information were emphasized to prevent further discord and suspicion among the populace.
