Amrut MD sees Indian market shifting towards single malt & premiumization

India’s taste for home-grown single malt whisky is on the rise, with domestic brands now claiming 53% market share over popular international names. Rakshit Jagdale, managing director of Amrut Distilleries, discussed the surging demand leading to capacity expansions and the growing preference for premium products in an interview with DH.

Highlights:

– The luxury division accounts for 25% of Amrut Distilleries’ net sales, with 60% coming from India and the rest from overseas.

– The premium spirits market in India is booming, driven by rising disposable incomes and a shift towards higher quality consumption.

– Amrut Distilleries expects to sell close to 65,000 cases of single malt this year, with a focus on global and domestic markets.

– Despite the India-UK FTA, Jagdale remains confident in the quality of Indian single malts and believes competition will only enhance the market.

– Amrut Distilleries is exploring new launches and innovations, including a single jaggery rum in the premium segment.
