AIIMS Delhi experienced an 80% drop in surgeries and a 35% decrease in admissions on Monday as resident doctors went on an indefinite strike to protest the rape and murder of a fellow doctor in Kolkata. The strike affected services like OPDs, laboratory, and radiological investigations, but emergency care continued to operate. The hospital’s administration issued a contingency plan to ensure minimal disruption to critical patient care services during the strike. A total of 625 admissions were made on Monday, with surgeries limited to vital cases only. Despite the strike, emergency services ran as usual, attended by resident doctors and faculty. The strike comes in response to a call from the Federation of Resident Doctors Association after the tragic incident in Kolkata. The AIIMS Delhi Resident Doctors’ Association demanded a transparent investigation into the case and adequate compensation for the victim’s family. The strike caused hardships for patients in various government hospitals in the capital. Time will tell how this strike will impact the ongoing healthcare services at AIIMS Delhi.
