5.4 magnitude quake rattles Syria-Jordan region

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake rattled the Jordan-Syria region early Tuesday, with residents in Türkiye’s southeastern provinces near the Syrian border feeling the impact. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake occurred at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles).

Syria’s state news agency reported the earthquake’s epicenter near the city of Hama, with residents across Syria and Lebanon also sensing the tremors. The memories of the devastating February 2023 earthquake that claimed lives in northern Syria and Türkiye resurfaced for many.

While the Syrian civil defense prepared for any potential emergencies and deployed to numerous areas, no damage reports had been received at the time. The earthquake serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity and the importance of being prepared for such natural disasters.
