5.2 magnitude shallow quake rattles Syria-Jordan region

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Jordan-Syria region late on Monday, as reported by Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). The earthquake, occurring at 11:56 p.m. local time, was felt in various southeastern provinces of Türkiye near the Syrian border.

According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake originated at a depth of 10 km. Syria’s state news agency confirmed the epicenter near the city of Hama, with residents across Syria and Lebanon feeling its impact.

In northern Syria, the quake triggered memories of a devastating earthquake in February 2023, which claimed thousands of lives. The Syrian civil defense teams in opposition-held areas have been on alert, although no damages have been reported yet.
