Turkey has ended the nationwide block on Instagram after over a week of restricted access. The ban, imposed by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority on Aug. 2, was lifted without a specific reason given initially. However, government officials later stated that Instagram had failed to comply with Turkish laws.
Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu confirmed on social media platform X that Instagram had assured the Turkish government that they would work together to censor users, particularly those involved in criminal activity. Uraloglu emphasized the importance of complying with Turkish laws and quickly intervening in cases of law violations.
Specifically targeting accounts affiliated with organizations like PKK, PYD, and FETO, Uraloglu highlighted the government’s efforts to remove content promoting terrorism. Instagram, with over 57 million users in Turkey, plays a significant role in the nation’s e-commerce sector, generating an estimated 930 million Turkish lira daily.
