The Gaza Man: Palestinian’s journey to Paris Olympics 2024

A unique story of resilience and determination unfolds in the life of Mohammed Hamada, a 22-year-old weightlifter from Gaza. Despite facing immense challenges, including war, destruction, and separation from his family, Mohammed pursued his dream of competing in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Mohammed’s journey began in the war-torn streets of Gaza, where he had to resort to eating animal food to survive, losing weight in the process. With the support of his family, including his brother Hussam, who trained him, Mohammed made history as the first Palestinian Olympic weightlifter at the Tokyo 2020 Games. His athletic career soared as he won gold at the 2022 International Weightlifting Federation Junior World Championships.

However, the outbreak of war between Israel and Gaza threatened Mohammed’s Olympic aspirations. Determined to overcome the obstacles, Mohammed and Hussam embarked on a perilous journey out of Gaza, facing challenges and sacrifices along the way.

Despite setbacks and disappointments, Mohammed remains steadfast in his pursuit of Olympic glory. With the next summer Olympics in their sights, the Hamada brothers continue to train diligently, ready to prove their resilience and strength on the international stage.
