A man has been arrested for allegedly dousing a synagogue in Zurich with petrol, police in Switzerland said. The 32-year-old Swiss national, described as “mentally disturbed,” attempted to attack the Agudas Achim Synagogue but was caught by a security guard. Despite initial reports of multiple attackers, the police confirmed he acted alone. The motive is not believed to be extremist.
Knife attack at same synagogue
In March, the Agudas Achim Synagogue witnessed an antisemitic knife attack on an Orthodox Jewish man. A 15-year-old Swiss boy was arrested in connection with that incident. Antisemitism and anti-Muslim hate crimes have been increasing across Europe, with a 400% rise reported since the recent conflict in Israel. The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights survey highlighted growing concerns about antisemitism, with many Jewish individuals feeling targeted due to Israeli government actions.
This incident in Zurich serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Jewish communities due to rising hate crimes in Europe.
