Election Dates in Jammu and Kashmir Awaited, Says LG Sinha
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha reiterated the government’s commitment to holding assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370. Sinha expressed hope that the Election Commission would soon announce polling dates, emphasizing the administration’s readiness for peaceful and fair elections.
Following the Delimitation Commission’s work to set new boundaries, the assembly size was increased in preparation for the upcoming polls. Sinha clarified that both Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have consistently stated that the assembly elections would be conducted promptly.
The recent visit of the Election Commission was a significant step towards preparing for the first Assembly elections post-Article 370 abrogation. Despite concerns raised by opposition parties, LG Sinha pointed to the successful Lok Sabha elections in the region as a sign of people’s faith in democracy.
Sinha also addressed criticism regarding jailed leader Engineer Rashid’s election, asserting the people’s decision in a democracy is paramount. He expressed confidence that the Supreme Court has endorsed the government’s decisions, calling the abrogation of Article 370 “historic.”
