Kursk Governor Urges Accelerated Evacuation Amid Ukrainian Incursion

Published on August 11, 2024

The acting governor of Kursk oblast in Russia, Alexei Smirnov, has called for the speedy evacuation of civilians near the Ukrainian border in the Belovsky district. This move comes as Russian authorities work to relocate people following a surprise Ukrainian presence in parts of Kursk. Despite not controlling any territory, Ukrainian forces have created a disruptive presence in the region.

Over 76,000 people have been temporarily moved to safe locations, according to the region’s emergency situations ministry. Russia is deploying additional military equipment and personnel to the area, portraying the situation as an escalation. The governor of Moscow Region and a presidential envoy have reassured evacuees at a camp in the Kursk Region.
