China attempts to approve ‘super embassy’ in London – Telegraph – RT World News

Chinese officials are reviving efforts to build a massive embassy complex in London, hoping for improved relations with the UK under Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The proposed compound, dubbed a “super embassy,” would cover nearly six square kilometers in the Royal Mint Court area, ten times larger than China’s current embassy in Marylebone. The complex would include an embassy, offices, homes, and a cultural center.

Despite a rejected initial proposal in 2022 over security concerns, Beijing remains determined to move forward with its plans. The purchase of Royal Mint Court in 2018 for £255 million faced opposition from local residents and British MPs, leading to a tense diplomatic climate between the UK and China. With the recent Labour Party victory in the general election, Chinese officials see an opportunity to mend strained ties through Foreign Secretary David Lammy’s planned visit to China in September.

Amidst uncertainties about Labour’s China policy, the Chinese government is hopeful that the new administration will be more receptive to their embassy plans. Stay tuned for further developments in this evolving diplomatic saga.
