Ahn Yong-sik, a professor emeritus at Yonsei University, recently co-authored a book titled “The Post-Liberation Activities of Koreans Who Served as Officials Under Japanese Colonial Rule.” The book, published by Buphyun, delves into the history of Korean officials who served during Japanese occupation and their subsequent roles in the US military government and the Third Republic of Korea.
Based on 35 years of research, Ahn’s work reveals that a significant number of Korean personnel in the US Army Military Government in Korea were former officials under Japanese rule. Despite criticisms of Korean officials benefiting from Japanese rule, Ahn highlights the complex socio-political dynamics that influenced their trajectory.
Ahn also critiques the US military government’s handling of administrative appointments, claiming that it essentially continued Japanese rule. Looking ahead, Ahn emphasizes the importance of documenting the evolution of the bureaucratic system in South Korea. Despite his age and declining strength, Ahn hopes future scholars will continue this important work.
