States Lagging Behind in Implementing the N70,000 Minimum Wage
According to recent reports, twenty-seven states and the Federal Capital Territory are yet to establish committees to implement the newly approved N70,000 minimum wage. Among these states are Plateau, Kebbi, Sokoto, Nasarawa, and Delta. However, states like Lagos and Edo have already started paying the minimum wage, with Lagos surpassing the required amount even before it became law.
Other states, including Kwara, Kano, and Borno, have set up committees to work out modalities for the new minimum wage payment. On the other hand, states like Gombe and Kogi are facing challenges due to insufficient funds, making it difficult for them to meet the new wage requirement. However, states like Plateau and Kebbi have expressed their willingness to negotiate with labor unions to ensure a successful implementation of the minimum wage.
It is essential for all states to prioritize the welfare of their workers and ensure timely and fair payment of the minimum wage as approved by the government.
