The United States has confirmed that alleged human rights violations by an Israeli Defense Force unit have been addressed after reviewing new information provided by Israel. The State Department stated that the Netzah Yehuda battalion’s actions have been “effectively remediated,” allowing them to continue receiving US security assistance.
Prior to this determination, the US had called for a criminal investigation into the battalion’s involvement in the death of a Palestinian-American man. Washington was initially considering designating the unit under a law prohibiting military aid to those committing gross human rights violations.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken informed Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant of the change in a conversation on Friday, as reported by Axios. Israeli media had previously suggested that sanctions would be imposed on the battalion for mistreatment of Palestinians in the West Bank.
Israel reacted strongly
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed outrage over the initial plan to sanction the unit, calling it absurd and morally wrong. Netanyahu vowed to fight against the sanctions, emphasizing his efforts to prevent harm to Israeli citizens in discussions with US officials.
