US State Department Clears Israeli Army Unit of Human Rights Abuses

The US State Department announced on Friday that alleged human rights abuses by an Israeli army unit have been “effectively remediated,” allowing the unit to continue receiving military assistance from Washington.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated that after a thorough review, incidents of gross violations of human rights by certain units of the Israeli Defense Forces had been addressed. The violations, which occurred in 2021, were unrelated to Israel’s recent actions in Gaza.

Following new information provided by Israel, the State Department found that another unit had also remediated violations, allowing it to receive security assistance from the US under the Leahy Law.

The Israeli army took steps such as removing soldiers involved in violations, enhancing screening requirements, and implementing new training methods to prevent future incidents.

In response to potential sanctions in April, Israeli leaders expressed support for the battalion and opposed any actions against Israeli military units.
